10” x 10” acrylic on wooden panel. From the Flora and Fauna series made in Listowel, Ireland.

Original write up:
“There’s a rhyme here, for when spotting a magpie:

“One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret, never to be told
Eight for a wish
Nine for a kiss
Ten for a bird you must not miss”
.
Because the first line is reminding you that if you see a singular magpie, it’s a sign of sorrow to come, people usually say “oh there must be one hiding over there behind the bush” or “must’ve just missed the group of them”, so this painting is called “Behind the Bush: Waiting for Joy to Come”.
